Heathen Fest America hit the road in fall 2009 with Eluveitie, Belphegor and Vreid on the bill.
The bands
Eluveitie is from Switzerland. They mix melodic death metal with bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, and flutes. Their songs draw on the old Celtic Helvetii tribes. Live, they sound huge.
Belphegor is from Austria. They play blackened death metal that is fast, harsh, and very evil. Not for the faint of heart.
Vreid is from Norway. The band rose out of Windir after Windir’s leader Valfar died in 2004. They play black metal with a rock and roll swing.
Why it was a cool tour
Three very different styles under one roof. Folk metal fans and black metal fans do not always mix. Heathen Fest got them in the same room. Tours like this helped folk metal grow in the US.
