Why a 7 string Explorer?

The Gibson Explorer first came out in 1958. Its sharp, angular body looked like nothing else back then. Later, metal players made it their own. James Hetfield is the most famous Explorer player, and plenty of death and black metal guitarists followed.

Seven string guitars add a low B string under the low E. That gives you a heavier, deeper range without detuning. By the late 2000s, seven strings were everywhere in metal. Gibson putting a seventh string on its most metal shape made a lot of sense.

Things to check when buying one used

  • Look for neck or headstock repairs. Gibson headstocks can crack if dropped.
  • Check the frets on the low B string for wear.
  • Make sure the case is included. Explorer cases are not cheap to replace.
