Voivod Guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour Dies

Voivod guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour passed away on August 26, 2005, from complications of colon cancer. He died in a Montreal hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was 45.

Why Piggy mattered

Voivod came out of Jonquière, Quebec in the early 80s. They started as raw thrash and turned into something nobody else sounded like. Piggy was a big reason why.

He used strange, dissonant chords that sounded like sci-fi movie music. Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss, and Nothingface are full of them. Metal, punk, and prog bands still borrow from his style.

His final recordings

Before he died, Piggy recorded guitar parts on his laptop for the next Voivod album. He told the band where to find them. The rest of the band built Katorz around those tracks, and it came out in 2006. Infini followed in 2009, also using his parts.

R.I.P. Piggy.
