Here are some tips to keep your metal t-shirts looking brand new, or as black as the blackest metal on the planet.
Personally, I just use Tide, cold water, and air dry. Black t-shirts will last years with little fading. Here is the full routine.
Before you wash
- Turn the shirt inside out. This protects the print.
- Wash darks with darks. Lint from towels shows up fast on black.
- Skip the bleach. Even small splashes leave orange spots on black cotton.
In the wash
- Use cold water. Hot water fades color and shrinks cotton.
- Use a gentle or normal cycle.
- Go easy on the detergent. Too much leaves a gray film.
Drying
- Hang dry or lay flat. This is the big one.
- If you must use a dryer, use low heat and pull it out a little damp.
- Never iron right on the print.
Vintage and rare shirts
Old tour shirts deserve extra care. Hand wash them in cold water, or do not wash them at all if they are display pieces. Store them folded, out of direct sun. Cracks in old prints get worse each time they go through a hot dryer.
