Dave Lombardo of Slayer with Metallica

What happened at Download 2004

In June 2004, Metallica were set to headline the Download Festival at Donington Park in England. Lars Ulrich got sick and could not play. The band went on anyway, with guest drummers.

Dave Lombardo of Slayer took a turn. So did Joey Jordison of Slipknot, who played most of the set. Lars’s drum tech Flemming Larsen played a song too. It was a strange night, but the crowd got a show nobody will forget.

Lombardo was a natural fit for Battery. It is one of the fastest songs in the Metallica catalog. His thrash background made it sound right at home.
