The cross-and-skulls design started life as a tattoo: artist Billy White Jr. drew it for Axl Rose at the singer’s request in the mid-1980s, working from Rose’s original concept. When Geffen Records pulled the band’s original Appetite for Destruction cover art after retailers refused to stock it, White’s design took its place — and became one of the most recognizable pieces of rock merchandise ever made.
