If you ever get lost in the sea of metal, the Map of Metal will help you find your way. Follow the threads to see how genres relate.
See it here: The Map of Metal.
What it is
The Map of Metal is an interactive chart of metal genres. Each style is drawn as an island or a region. Lines show where genres came from and what they turned into. Click on one and you get a short history and example songs.
Start with the blues and Black Sabbath. Then follow the paths to thrash, death metal, black metal, doom, power metal, and dozens of smaller scenes. It is a great way to find new bands.
Why genre maps help
Metal has a lot of subgenres, and fans love to argue about them. A map makes it easy to see the big picture. You can see how Venom led to black metal, or how Slayer and Possessed led to death metal.
